The United Nations General Assembly has voted to adopt the "Equal Earth" cartographic projection as its new official world map, replacing the traditional 1569 Mercator projection. Supported by 164 nations, the resolution aims to provide a more precise representation of continental sizes. The new map depicts Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Oceania as significantly larger, while shrinking North America and Europe. Togo sponsored the proposal, with co-sponsor France announcing it will phase out the Mercator map to correct historical visual distortions. However, the United States voted against the measure, criticizing the assembly for focusing on historical cartography rather than pressing global issues. Six other countries abstained from the vote.
