HarperCollins India is scheduled to publish Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, "Belonging: A Journey of Love," on November 10, resolving previous uncertainties regarding its domestic release. The announcement followed an impasse between the author and Penguin Random House India (PRHI), which was originally slated to release the book in India. According to publishing insiders, disagreements emerged when the initial publisher recommended revisions to sections addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and India-China ties, modifications that Ms. Gandhi declined to make to avoid self-censorship. While Congress leaders alleged that PRHI faced external pressure to modify sensitive passages, the publisher maintained that editorial evaluations and fact-checking are standard procedures and denied outside interference. With HarperCollins India handling the domestic launch, the unedited memoir will hit Indian bookstores on the same day as its international edition, published by Alfred A. Knopf.
