Hundreds of activists and community members gathered in San Francisco to mark the 80th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre. Organized by several coalitions, the annual event aims to raise awareness of the war crimes committed by the Japanese Imperial Army, which captured Nanjing on December 13, 1937, leading to the deaths of 300,000 Chinese citizens and the sexual enslavement of thousands of women. Speakers at the memorial, including the acting Chinese consul general and the president of the Comfort Women Justice Coalition, emphasized that acknowledging historical truths is essential for reconciliation and lasting peace. They urged the Japanese government to formally recognize these atrocities. The Nanjing Massacre, which is officially commemorated as a national memorial day in China, was added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2015.
