A federal judge in Seattle has allowed a discrimination lawsuit filed by 19-year-old Stanley Zhong against the University of Washington to proceed to the evidence-gathering phase. Zhong, an Asian American software engineer now employed by Google, was rejected by 16 of the 18 universities he applied to in 2023, despite achieving a 4.42 GPA, a 1590 SAT score, and founding a tech startup. The lawsuit alleges that the university's admissions process holds Asian American applicants to higher standards. Judge James Robart ruled the claim plausible, pointing to university diversity documents that outline specific racial representation targets. Representing themselves with the help of artificial intelligence, Zhong's family has initiated similar legal actions against several other major American universities, citing the 2023 Supreme Court ruling that banned race-conscious admissions.
