Researchers suggest that damage inflicted on Gaza's sanitation and sewage infrastructure by Israeli military operations may have intensified harmful algae blooms across the Mediterranean Sea. The proliferation of these blooms has consequently disrupted the operation of five of Israel's six major seawater desalination facilities. Because the arid country depends heavily on these plants to secure its domestic water supply, the ecological fallout in the marine environment poses a direct threat to regional water resources.
