Air India Express is set to halt its flight services between Chennai and Madurai starting October 25, 2026, ending a 68-year-old route previously run by Indian Airlines and Air India. Industry sources state this decision will leave IndiGo as the sole operator on the route, raising concerns about a monopoly. While the airline cites viability issues, local travel agents and tour operators dispute this claim, pointing to consistent passenger numbers. They warn that the suspension could negatively impact tourism in southern Tamil Nadu during the upcoming peak travel season. Consequently, travel representatives are urging regional members of parliament to raise the issue with the Union Aviation Minister to prevent the cancellation.
