On September 5, 2026, local administration and police forces in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, carried out the demolition of a mosque situated within the District Magistrate’s office complex. The action followed a ruling by the City Magistrate's court last month, which declared the structure unauthorized and ordered its removal. To maintain order, security personnel were heavily deployed in the area. Meanwhile, Lok Sabha member Iqra Hasan of the Samajwadi Party was placed under house arrest at her residence to prevent her from traveling to the site. The Samajwadi Party strongly criticized the administration's move, with senior leader Afzal Ansari condemning the detention of the lawmaker and accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of deliberately inciting communal discord in the state ahead of the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections.
