Chinese authorities have detained 52 Singapore nationals since mid-July under suspicion of participating in a pyramid scheme, marking the largest reported overseas detention of Singaporeans at one time. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that consular staff from Beijing and Guangzhou have visited all detainees and are in contact with their families, while Singaporean police liaise with Chinese law enforcement during ongoing inquiries. The case highlights ongoing enforcement against multi-level marketing scams, such as the Guangxi-based "1040 Sunshine Project." In these operations, participants are typically lured through personal contacts or false promises of high returns on state-backed ventures before paying substantial entry fees. China has maintained a broad crackdown on such operations, investigating more than 200,000 pyramid scheme and direct selling cases between 2021 and 2025.
