The surge in heat is linked to a strong El Nino weather system over the Pacific, which is projected to generate warmer and drier conditions across southern parts of Australia throughout the spring season. The combination of elevated temperatures, dry air, and gusty northwesterly winds led meteorologists to warn of dangerous conditions across the Greater Sydney area. Consequently, emergency authorities declared a total fire ban for the city, classifying the bushfire threat at an extreme level, the second highest rating available.
